Clitheroe vs Trafford FC

Trafford’s magnificent run of six consecutive wins came to an end on Tuesday night when they were defeated 3-1 in a pulsating clash at Clitheroe.
The game was a great advert for non-league football with both teams totally committed to attack and producing a plethora of goalmouth incidents.
Trafford took the lead in the 17th minute when a right wing corner by Matty Morgan was headed down into the bottom corner by skipper Harry Norris.
The visitors were playing some delightful, slick football and in the 22nd minute almost struck again when Isaac Noble crossed from the left and Morgan’s goal-bound effort was blocked by a defender.
Trafford centre back Jordan Fagbola then saw his half-volley from close range cleared off the line whilst at the other end Jack Higginbottom defended brilliantly when faced with a two v one situation.
As half-time approached Clitheroe began to get on top but they got a helping hand from the referee in the 35th minute when Sean Higgins cleared the ball from his right back position but was somehow deemed to have fouled Lenni Cirino in the process. Sam Booth produced a great save to parry Veron Parny’s spot kick but Louis Potts reacted first and fired home the rebound.
Undaunted by this misjustice, Trafford pushed forward once more with Ryley Smith hesitating when in a great position and Matty Morgan blasting a shot from 20 yards that was denied by a fabulous save by Hakan Burton.
The second half was similar to the first with both teams pushing forward relentlessly and at great pace and in the 57th minute a fine move by the visitors ended with Isaac Noble shooting weakly at Burton.
Rio Clegg, returning to the side following his three game suspension, released Morgan down the right but his powerful drive was easily held by Burton.
Clitheroe’s Domaine Rouse headed wide at the back post following a deep free kick from the left and Ryley Smith wasted a free kick in a great position when he fired the ball into the defensive wall.
Sam Booth produced several breath-taking saves as Clitheroe poured forward in the closing stages but he was powerless to prevent the hosts from taking the lead in the 79th minute when Charlie Hayes-Green rose the highest to head a left wing corner inside the far upright.
Trafford manager Karl Marginson made a triple substation to hopefully refresh his side but five minutes later Hayes-Green struck again with a carbon copy header, this time from a right wing corner, to make it 3-1.
Marginson’s team battled valiantly to the end but a superbly entertaining game of football came to a close with the Lancashire side triumphant.
Despite this setback, Trafford remain in second place in the NPL West Division table but face another tricky fixture on Saturday when they make the long journey to Chasetown, kick off 3 p.m. Then a week on Tuesday they entertain Mossley at the Away Day Care Shawe View Stadium, kick off 7-45 p.m.

vs

Trafford FC vs Atherton Collieries

Trafford made it six wins on the bounce as they defeated Atherton Collieries 3-1 to book their place in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy.
Ryley Smith curled a 25 yard free kick inches wide as Trafford made a confident start and in the 10th minute they forged ahead, Damola Sotona making a great run down the left and crossing to Matty Morgan who was bundled to the ground. Sotona coolly dispatched the resultant spot kick past Ellis Litherland and into the bottom corner.
Colls were finding plenty of space down their right flank and in the 15th minute Calen Gallagher fired over from the edge of the penalty area.
In the 26th minute Trafford struck again, Hilal Khan floating a corner over from the left that Colls failed to clear and home centre back Jordan Fagbola pouncing to poke the ball home from close range.
Just sixty seconds later the visitors were unfortunate not to score, Eden Bailey catching home keeper Ollie Culkin out of position and crashing an angled drive against the right hand upright from 25 yards.
Litherland pushed an Isaac Noble effort past the post following a lightning fast break by Trafford and as half-time approached, with the visitors just about on top, Ollie Culkin produced a superb point blank save to thwart Eden Bailey.
In the dying seconds of the first half Colls created another good chance with Oliver Putnam heading straight at Culkin from just eight yards.
Visiting manager Michael Clegg made two tactical substitutions at half-time and Colls pushed forward relentlessly, Ethan Kershaw rifling a shot just over from 20 yards.
Trafford boss Karl Marginson responded by making three substitutions of his own, introducing Glenn Matthews, Harry Norris and Rob Worrall to the action.
And this bold move paid immediate dividends as ,just four minutes later, Ryley Smith brilliantly nut-megged a Colls defender out on the left and struck a beautiful low, angled drive inside the far post to make it 3-0.
Trafford’s two remaining substitutes, Kanye Nisbett and Matty Lusakueno, replaced the tiring Matty Morgan and Isaac Noble and for several minutes the home side appeared to lose their tactical shape, and in the 67th minute Colls were rewarded for their enterprise when Will Riding broke clear on the right and, after initially being denied by a superb save by Culkin, had the wherewithal to fire the rebound inside the far post.
Colls sensed that an unlikely comeback was on the cards but the Trafford defence repelled everything thrown at them, marshalled once again by another towering performance by Jordan Fagbola, and the only half chance the visitors created was a snapshot by Eden Bailey that was comfortably held by Culkin.
Trafford now eagerly await the draw for the FA Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round on Monday lunch time before turning their attentions to Tuesday nights league Fixture at Clitheroe when they will be hoping that another victory can see them return to the top of the NPL West Division table.

Runcorn Linnets vs Trafford FC

Runcorn Linnets 0, Trafford 2 – Northern Premier League West Division, Saturday 14th September 2024
Trafford’s incredible form continued on Saturday when they regained 1st position in the NPL West with a 2-0 victory away at Runcorn Linnets – This despite having goalkeeper Sam Booth sent off after an hour played!
The opening phases of the game were good for Trafford – they were tidy on the ball and quick to regain it after losing possession. Chances were few & far between for the first 10 or 15 minutes, but Runcorn then began to make their mark, forcing some corners at the Trafford end, and seeing a couple of long-range shots whizz past Sam Booth’s woodwork.
Trafford kept their discipline however, and on 37 minutes a well worked move involving Mike Burke and Isaac Noble gave Ryley Smith a shot at the home side’s goal. His effort was parried by Linnets’ on-loan Man United Youth ‘Keeper Thomas Myles, but Noble was sharpest in the box, the Trafford No.7 netting the rebound from a tight angle.
The second half followed much the same pattern – the home side having good spells of possession, as you’d expect, but Trafford’s well-marshalled defence and goalkeeper Sam Booth taking care of business. The game changed in the 62nd minute when Booth exited his penalty area to deal with a dangerous one-on-one as Runcorn’s Taylor Bowen tore towards the Trafford goal looking for an equaliser. As last man, Booth had to go, and Trafford faced a nervy half-hour one goal ahead, down to ten men, and with midfielder Matty Morgan in nets!
We needn’t have worried – Morgan’s handling was good, the defence remained strong, and the home side seemed unable to make the extra man count. Trafford sealed the victory with six minutes to go when substitute Kanye Nisbett broke free at pace, and with two defenders fruitlessly chasing him, Nisbett coolly slotted it past the ‘keeper for 2-0.
The win took Karl Marginson’s team back to the top of the Pitching-In NPL West Division after 6 games played. This coming Saturday 21st September, the team is at home to Atherton Collieries in FA Trophy action, kick off 3pm. (Picture by Kelly Jones, Runcorn Linnets FC)

vs

Bridlington Town vs Trafford FC

Trafford edged through to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy on Saturday with another superb defensive performance that included a brilliant penalty save by Sam Booth in the 60th minute.
Karl Marginson’s side started confidently and took the lead in the 8th minute when, following a neatly worked corner from the right, centre back Jordan Fagbola neatly volleyed home at the back post.
Town were under new management following an inauspicious start to the season and battled back gamely, Sam Booth producing a fine save at point blank range to deny Michael Coulson a 22nd minute equaliser.
Damola Sotona drilled a great low cross that just evaded Mike Burke as Trafford sought a second goal but the hosts were on top as half time approached and Booth was called into action once more when he pushed an Alex Markham thunderbolt past his left hand upright.
The hosts were the dominant force for much of the second half with Nathan Dyer firing straight at Booth in the 49th minute and Freddie Allen doing likewise with a header from a right wing corner.
In the 60th minute Town poured forward once more and Trafford centre back Jack Higginbottom tripped substitute Kyle Fanning just inside the penalty area. Sam Booth then produced a magnificent save, throwing himself to his right to parry Coulson’s powerfully struck spot kick.
Manager Marginson introduced substitutes Rob Worrall and Matty Lusakueno to the action in the 64th minute and his remaining substitutes Harry Norris, Matty Morgan and Kanye Nisbett, twelve minutes later and this appeared to settle Trafford.
Matty Morgan wasted a great chance in the 78th minute when he shot high and wide instead of playing in the unmarked Matty Lusakueno and then Harry Norris just failed to connect with a free kick from the left by Rob Worrall.
Freddie Allen almost turned the ball past his own goalkeeper as Trafford dominated the closing stages and seven minutes into injury time Lusakueno curled a shot inches wide after cutting in from the left.
A minute later Kanye Nisbett spurned the best chance of all when he spooned his shot over from just ten yards with the goal at his mercy but despite these wasted opportunities, and the referee adding thirteen minutes of injury time, Trafford held out to progress to the next round.
Once again, Trafford’s victory was built on great defensive resilience and organisation with Jordan Fagbola and Jerome Wright particularly outstanding backed by some brilliant goalkeeping by Sam Booth.
However, they must now focus their attentions on the league as they face a tricky trip to play Runcorn Linnets on Saturday, kick off 3 p.m.

vs

Trafford FC vs Hanley Town

Ten man Trafford go top after magnificent home win!

Ten man Trafford came from a goal down to secure three points and move to the top of the Northern Premier League West Division.
Karl Marginson’s side started confidently, obviously buoyed by the six points gained over the Bank Holiday, and should have taken the lead after just four minutes when Rio Clegg found himself in space in the Town penalty area but dallied on the ball and was crowded out.
Town were causing problems at set-pieces due to their physical superiority and, after Will Igeo had curled a shot just wide from the left, took the lead in the 21st minute when Trafford failed to clear a right wing corner and Joel Stair hooked the ball home at the back post.
In the 28th minute Trafford’s task was made all the more difficult when Rio Clegg was red carded for a late challenge on Brandon Newell but Trafford responded brilliantly when Jerome Wright fired over from the left seven minutes later.

In the 38th minute Town left back Louis Keenan handled the ball inside his own penalty area and when Adam Whitehouse parried the resultant spot kick by Brad Byrne, the Trafford midfielder had the presence of mind to follow up and net the rebound.
The first half came to a close with home left back Damola Sotona making several surging runs and striker Mike Burke firing just wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Trafford showed tremendous resolve throughout the second half and in the 52nd minute Mike Burke was desperately unlucky when his first time shot from eight yards rattled the crossbar.

Four minutes later Trafford reaped the rewards that their enterprise deserved, Jerome Wright flighting a brilliant free kick from 20 yards that went in off the underside of the crossbar.
The hosts were beginning to tire but once again manager Marginson utilised his five substitutes to great effect and in the 74th minute Rob Worrall almost made it three but saw his free kick saved at the foot of the post by Whitehouse.
In the 75th minute home keeper Sam Booth produced a superb save to push a Tom Pope header past the upright and was called into action again shortly afterwards when he saved from Will Igeo.
Trafford’s defence was once again in tremendous form, marshalled by the veterans Jerome Wright and Jordan Fagbola, and the final whistle signalled a wonderful victory for the boys from Shawe View who have now won four out of their first five league games and sit proudly at the top of their division.
However, they must now concentrate their efforts on the FA Trophy and a long trip to Bridlington Town next Saturday, kick off 3 p.m.

vs

Stalybridge Celtic vs Trafford FC

Trafford moved up to fourth place in the NPL West Division following a magnificent 2-1 victory at Stalybridge Celtic on Bank Holiday Monday.
The game was a contrast in styles with the hosts playing a physical, aggressive, long ball game whilst Trafford relied on their neat possession based football.
And despite seeing their side dominate the early stages, the home fans were rocked in the 12th minute when Trafford stormed ahead, Rio Clegg drilling a low shot that Charlie Monks failed to hold allowing Isaac Noble to follow up and net the rebound.
On the half-hour the visitors doubled their lead when Celtic centre back Danny Lafferty and keeper Monks got in a tangle and Rio Clegg seized on the loose ball to slot it into the empty net.
Trafford keeper Sam Booth produced a fine save to thwart Jack Irlam and just before the break Celtic centre back Jack Tinning headed a right wing corner over as the hosts sought a way back into the game.
Celtic came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half obviously buoyed by a stern telling off by their manager and in the 56th minute Connor Hughes headed wide at the back post before Jack Irlam nodded over from 10 yards.
The Trafford defence was tremendous throughout, lead by another monumental performance by Jordan Fagbola, and in the 79th minute Rio Clegg should have sealed the points with a third goal but chipped the ball weakly into keeper Monks hands after a fine defence splitting pass by substitute Bailey Brown.
Celtic were thrown a lifeline in the 82nd minute when Prince Anuniru was tripped in the penalty area, skipper Liam Tongue forcing the resultant spot kick past Booth despite the Trafford keeper getting a hand to the ball.
Despite this late goal, and the referee adding eleven minutes of injury time, the visitors held out for a marvellous victory, coming just two days after their home win over Widnes, and they can now look forward to Saturday’s league clash at the Away Day Care Shawe View Stadium when Hanley Town are the visitors, kick off 3 p.m.

vs

Trafford FC vs Widnes

A battling, backs-to-the-wall performance allied to some sheer good fortune paved the way for Trafford’s 1-0 win over Widnes on Saturday, a victory that moves them up into seventh place in the NPL West Division.
Widnes were on top from the start with a speculative shot from Sharif Deans rebounding off the crossbar in the 9th minute as the home defence lead a charmed life.
However, with their first meaningful attack, and completely against the run of play, Trafford took the lead in the 13th minute when Hilal Khan released Rio Clegg with a defence splitting pass, Clegg coolly placing his shot past the advancing Mark Halstead.
Clegg almost made it two four minutes later with a sensational effort from just inside his own half, spotting Halstead off his line and firing a magnificent effort that flew inches over the crossbar.
Hilal Khan was revealing some sublime touches in midfield but defences were generally on top for the remainder of the first half, the only chance of note falling to Rio Clegg in injury time when he collected a great crossfield pass by Jerome Wright and blasted over from 15 yards.
Karl Marginson’s side made a strong start to the second half with full back Damola Sotona weaving his way through the Widnes defence before seeing his shot saved by Halstead.
Jerome Wright’s surging run down the left ended with a rasping drive into the side-netting before the visitors began to take control and push forward in search of the equaliser.
In the 53rd minute Trafford skipper Sean Higgins carelessly conceded possession deep inside his own half but retrieved the situation with a magnificent block on his goal-line.
Three minutes later Higgins performed more heroics when he scampered back to conjure up two more stunning goal-line clearances as Widnes poured forward.
Manager Marginson made three substitutions in an attempt to stem the tide but still the visitors dominated, Louis Isherwood heading against the post in the 70th minute.
Home keeper Sam Booth pushed another Isherwood header past the upright, Trafford introduced their two remaining substitutes and in the 88th minute Rio Clegg struck another audacious shot from fully 45 yards that keeper Halstead fumbled past the post.
Widnes winger James Steele volleyed over as the visitors fought desperately for the equaliser and three minutes into injury time Niall Battersby thundered a drive from 15 yards that rattled Booth’s right hand post.
The Trafford defence, superbly marshalled by Jordan Fagbola, somehow managed to weather the storm and so made it two wins from three in an impressive start to the 24-25 season.
On Monday Trafford travel to play Stalybridge Celtic before hosting Hanley Town at the Away Day Care Shawe View Stadium on Saturday, both games kicking off at 3 p.m.

vs

Trafford FC vs Emley AFC

The sending off of centre back Glenn Matthews after just 15 minutes proved to be the turning point as Trafford crashed out of the FA Cup at the Preliminary Round stage on Saturday.
The Northern Premier League East Division outfit were on top from the start with Donae Lawrence breaking clear in the 8th minute but being denied by a brilliant save by Sam Booth.
Booth saved again from Lawrence just sixty seconds later and Charles Barks headed over as the visitors dominated and Referee Bragg had no alternative but to brandish a red card when Matthews recklessly lunged at Adam Clayton as the Emley player ran the ball out of defence.
Trafford were incredibly unlucky not to take the lead in the 26th minute when Rio Clegg broke down the right and crossed for Matty Lusakueno to crash his shot against the crossbar but this was an isolated attack by the hosts as Emley pushed forward incessantly.
A teasing cross by Harrison Sheppherd was pushed behind by Sam Booth but the Trafford keeper was helpless in preventing Emley from taking the lead in the 33rd minute when a low cross from the left was expertly volleyed in at the near post by Nathan Curtis.
Trafford were struggling to contain the lively Emley forwards and they were left with a mountain to climb just seconds before half-time when Amir Birchil cut inside substitute Mackena Bradshaw and blasted a great shot into the top corner to make it 2-0.
Karl Marginson’s side battled gamely in the opening stages of the second half and in the 51st minute Jerome Wright showed a great piece of skill to coast past an Emley defender and crack a low drive that was pushed behind by Declan Lambton.
Rio Clegg then saw his shot from just eight yards somehow blocked on the line by Barks but on the hour mark the visitors struck again when man-of-the-match Birchil outpaced Bradshaw on the left and coolly side-footed the ball past the advancing Sam Booth.
Trafford substitute Kanye Nisbett wasted a golden opportunity when he volleyed wide from 10 yards three minutes later but the experienced Yorkshiremen were well in control and should have added to their tally in the closing stages.
James Walshaw headed wide at the back post in the 84th minute, Sam Booth saved from Al Keita shortly afterwards and then in the dying seconds Charles Barks just failed to connect cleanly with a cross from the right.
Emley thoroughly deserved their victory and a place in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round but Trafford can reflect on the fact that they were missing the services of skipper Harry Norris, Sean Higgins, Rob Worrall and Hilal Khan due to injuries, and a moment of madness from Glenn Matthews that left them with a momentous, and ultimately impossible task.
Manager Marginson will be hoping that some if not all of those injured players will be available for Saturday’s NPL West Division fixture when they entertain Widnes FC at the Away Day Care Shawe View Stadium, kick off 3 pm.
