Two second half goals by an Altrincham side comprised almost completely of trialists gave the visitors victory in their traditional pre-season clash at the Home Estates Shawe View Stadium.
Both teams fielded almost full strength line-ups in the first half with the first chance of note falling to Trafford in the 13th minute when Glen Matthews fired a 20 yard free kick straight at Ollie Byrne.
A slick move by the Robins ended with Elliott Osborne screwing a shot wide and then Trafford’s Matty Barlow shot weakly at Byrne from the left.
The visitors were dominating possession and in the 27th minute Trafford skipper Astley Mulholland misdirected a header but fortunately Isaac Marriott blasted his volley wildly over.
Ben Pringle then struck a fine drive from 25 yards that Matty Cooper tipped over and the hosts keeper was in action once more on the stroke of half-time when he denied Osborne at point blank range.
Apart from Altrincham goalkeeper Byrne both teams fielded completely different line-ups in the second half with ten trialists on show for Alty and six youth team players in Danny Caldecott’s team.
And it was the visitors who were on top for long spells, Isaac Modi putting them ahead in the 73rd minute with a back post header past goalkeeper Niall Jordan.
Jordan then produced a brilliant save to tip a thunderous dipping drive over the crossbar but from the resulting corner an unnamed trialist volleyed powerfully into the bottom corner to give a final score of 2-0.
On Saturday Trafford travel to New Mills for another ‘friendly’ before hosting Bury FC at the Home Estates Shawe View Stadium on Tuesday evening, kick off 7-45 p.m.
