Trafford’s brave, spirited and dominant second half performance was in vain as they conceded two goals in the last two minutes to crash out of the Manchester Premier Cup at Radcliffe.
It took the hosts just four minutes to take the lead when Jude Oyibo broke down the left and crossed hard and low to the back post where Jake Thompson tapped home.
Seven minutes later Trafford levelled when Alfie Belcher fed Mike Burke whose shot from ten yards was deflected past Bradley Rose.
Back came Radcliffe and in the 15th minute another scintillating run by Oyibo ended with a cross from the left that Rick Smith netted simply from close range.
Burke was then denied of another equaliser by a brave save by Rose but it was Radcliffe who were creating the better chances with Obiyo and Nicky Adams both going close.
In the 34th minute Trafford had a let off when keeper Matty Cooper slipped when taking a goal kick but fortunately Bobby Grant blasted over with the goal at his mercy.
In the dying seconds of the first half Trafford were dealt a hammer blow when Grant made amends for his earlier miss by converting yet another cross from the left and at 3-1 the visitors were left a mountain to climb.
However, Danny Caldecott’s team were magnificent in that second period with Rob Worrall and Astley Mulholland dominating midfield and Mike Burke and Alfie Belcher both squandering chances to reduce the arrears.
A great drive from 20 yards by Matty Morgan was pushed past the post by Rose whilst at the other end Matty Cooper brilliantly tipped a Gareth Evans header over the crossbar.
In the 81st minute Trafford substitutes Matty Barlow and Tom Bentham combined with the latter coolly slotting the ball past Rose to make it 3-2 and hopefully set up a grandstand finish.
However, it was not to be and in the 88th minute a lightning fast counter attack by the hosts ended with Jake Thompson breaking clear and firing home, and two minutes later Thompson struck again to complete a fine hat-trick but give a rather flattering final score-line of 5-2.
On Saturday Trafford return to league action when they entertain Newcastle Town at the Home Estates Shawe View Stadium, kick off 3 p.m.
