Trafford produced an outstanding performance to stun play-off hopefuls Linnets and revive their own hopes of promotion.
Heavy rain in the hours leading up to, and throughout the game, made for a playing surface conducive to slick skilful football and both teams contributed to an exciting spectacle to thrill the 381 hardy souls who braved the elements.
Nevertheless neither goalkeeper was called upon to make a save of any note in a defence dominated first half in which the Trafford centre back partnership of Adam Rooney and Joe Denman were once again in formidable form.
Trafford’s right winger Kane Badby, on loan from Oldham Athletic, made numerous darting runs down his flank but the Linnets defence held firm and the only goal-scoring opportunities of the first period were two free kicks from just outside the visitors’ penalty area that Robert Worrall curled inches over the crossbar.
In the 51st minute the first save of the game was made by home keeper Matty Cooper when he comfortably held a 20 yard drive by Joe Lynch and within sixty seconds Trafford surged forward to take the lead.
A neat interchange of passes ended with Matty Barlow striking a hard low shot from 15 yards that was parried at full length by Matthew Alexander allowing Matty Morgan to pounce and drill the ball home from close range.
Seven minutes later Trafford struck again with Robert Worrall orchestrating a move down the left, Mike Burke seeing his shot blocked on the line and Kane Badby following up to slot the ball past Alexander.
Runcorn centre forward Thomas Marsh-Hughes headed over in the 74th minute as Linnets applied pressure but Trafford were once again defending magnificently and displaying tremendous work-rate and commitment.
Matty Cooper pushed a stinging close-range effort by Dapo Olerawaju into the side-netting but Trafford finished the game on top with substitute Djavan Pedro showing great strength, skill and aerial power in a short cameo performance, and the final whistle signalled a marvellous victory for Danny Caldecott’s young side.
On Saturday, Trafford are in action once again at the Home Estates Shawe View Stadium when they entertain second placed Marine, kick off 3 p.m.
